WANTED: Unwanted...

Whilst working in Slovenia under the European Voluntary Service program, I ran my own recycled fashion project with people locally, nationally and internationally. The project (and my time at Art Center) is now finished :-( but here is a brief diary of what went on in summer 2006...

16 June

Posters were put up on the notice board of Središče, to inform residents about the project, and notify them that I would be visiting houses to deliver bags for them to fill. Posters were also placed in local bar Anica Jonaš, informing people from further afield that they could leave donations there.

the following week... I produced envelopes repeating the information given on the poster. The envelopes contained the hungarian translation, and a large blue bag onto which I printed the project title.

24 June I went to Središče with the whole Art Center team to deliver the envelopes to the people. Središče is a very small village- in total we delivered 15 bags.

3 July Back to Središče, this time with the car! The villagers were extremely generous, and some were even asking for more bags to fill! After returning to all the houses (and drinking a few šprices), I found myself with over 200 items of clothing, along with some other household objects...

3 July Onwards! The work begins!!! In between having a life, and arranging project events, I spent my time cutting, ripping, destroying, experimenting, but ultimately creating new things from the old...

10-14 July Recycled bags at Metelkova, Ljubljana

I spent one week showing people in Menza Pri Koritu how to make interesting bags from their old things... there were some ineteresting results, including an inside out teletubby, and a hammock!

16 August

Trash Design at Ecotopia, Slovakia (...not Slovenia)

Armed with supplies after visiting a local recycling centre, I helped people at this environmental meeting to create recycled products. The favourites were bags from books, and beer can ashtrays

15 October The villagers who donated the clothes were the first to see the reincarnations at Gasilski Dom Sredisce. The night began with a workshop, and featured videos of the process and free gifts for the generous locals.

27th October The exhibition moves to Ljubljana, in Galerija Alkatraz. Filmed and interviewed by TV and newspaper journalists, the night had a similar format to the previous exhibition, ending in an auction... about half the items were sold
